Back in the Game: Why High School Athletes Should Be Proactive About Injuries

Helping Roanoke’s Athletes Stay Strong, Healthy, and Ready to Perform

As high school athletes across Roanoke head back into practice, preseason conditioning, and competition, the energy is high—but so is the risk for injury. Whether it’s football, volleyball, cross-country, or any fall sport, the transition back to full-speed training puts the body under stress it may not be fully ready for.

At Highland Spine and Sport, we specialize in helping active individuals—especially young athletes—stay ahead of injuries so they don’t lose a season (or more) to something that could’ve been prevented.

Why Injuries Happen Early in the Season

Every year, we see the same trend: athletes come into the season deconditioned or tight from summer, then ramp up intensity too quickly. Common issues include:

  • Hamstring or quad strains
  • Low back pain from poor core control
  • Shoulder pain in overhead athletes (volleyball, baseball, swimmers)
  • Knee pain from imbalanced movement or poor landing mechanics

These problems don’t always start with a big “pop” or dramatic injury. Often, they creep in slowly—tightness, soreness, fatigue—and build into something more serious if left unchecked.

Proactive Care > Reactive Care

Too often, athletes wait until the pain is affecting their performance—or pulling them out of practice altogether—before seeking help. At Highland Spine and Sport, we believe in being proactive, not reactive.

That means:

  • Assessing movement patterns before problems arise
  • Addressing tightness and dysfunction early
  • Teaching simple activation and recovery strategies
  • Giving athletes a plan to stay strong and injury-free all season

What an Athletic Check-In Looks Like

Every high school athlete’s body is different. That’s why we do a full movement-based assessment tailored to the demands of their sport. We check for:

  • Muscle imbalances
  • Joint restrictions
  • Core and glute activation
  • Functional strength and control
  • Flexibility and postural habits

From there, we may use a combination of chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapy, dry needling, and personalized rehab exercises to get them feeling and moving at their best.

Set the Tone for the Season

The beginning of the season is the perfect time to make sure your athlete is moving well, recovering properly, and preventing issues before they start. Whether they’re looking to prevent injuries, recover faster, or simply perform at a higher level, we’re here to help.

Ready to Perform at Your Best?

If you're a high school athlete in Roanoke or the parent of one, now is the time to schedule a performance check-in. Let’s make sure this season is their best—and healthiest—one yet.
